A serious, and epic rock poem. Crown jewel of the album. This is a beautiful, but painful ballad. That why it is great. The lyrics come alive by the musical composition, the classical beauty of the piano work (yes, real classical music), combined with Axl’s original hard rock balladeering (think Sweet Child of Mine). The vocals are like melding two singers without mixing them over one another–just a straight run through. The song is so compelling. Would make Freddy Mercury smile. I wonder if Axl will read this. Street of Dreams is my next favorite song on the album, and it is growing on me.

Axl Rose has always been about bombast. I don’t know he’s capable of writing something simple and beautiful… at least not for more than a few measures at a time. And y’know what? That’s ok. That’s *more* than ok, because he writes stuff that’s complex and layered and beautiful, and uses the elements of simplicity to highlight and augment the layering he does so well. This song is gorgeous, and might be the best thing on an excellent album.

I’m no fanboy, either. I’m just blown out of the water by the album on its own merits.
